PITRU PAKSHA - SHRADDHA - MAHALAYA AMAVASYA- SARVAPITRA MOKSHA AMAVASYA

Pitru Paksha is literally "fortnight of the ancestors.. It usually starts right after Ganesha festival and ends with Mahalaya amavasya.. (After  amavasya Navaratri festival begins).

So what is Pitru Paksha ???  It is religious practise performed by  son, to pacify their unsatiated souls.

If death anniversary of ancestors are not known or forgotten then those Shraddhas can be performed on this Tithi. That's why Amavasya Shraddha is also known as Sarvapitra Moksha Amavasya.

During Pitru Paksha,  Pitra or ancestors come near to the earth.  After performing mahalaya Shraddha it is believed, they remain satisfied throughout the year.Annadaana or giving food to the hungry is a central part of the rituals during these 16 days.

Markandeya Purana says that if the ancestors are content with the shraddhas, they will bestow health, wealth, knowledge and longevity,  and salvation  upon the performer.

A shraddha ritual performed on this day is considered as fruitful as one conducted in the holy city of Gaya, which is seen as a special place to perform the rite, and hosts a fair during the Pitru Paksha period.

Story behind Shraddha:

According to hindus, the souls of three preceding generations of one's ancestor reside in Pitru–loka, a realm between heaven and earth. This realm is governed by yama, the god of death, who takes the soul of a dying man from earth to Pitru–loka. When a person of the next generation dies, the first generation shifts to heaven and unites with God, so Shraddha offerings are not given. Thus, only the three generations in Pitru–loka are given Shraddha rites, in which Yama plays a significant role

When Karna died in the  war, his soul transcended to heaven, where he was offered gold and jewels as food. However, Karna needed real food to eat and asked Indra, the lord of heaven, the reason for serving gold as food. Indra told Karna that he had donated gold all his life, but had never donated food to his ancestors in Shraddha. Karna said that since he was unaware of his ancestors, he never donated anything in their memory. To make amends, Karna was permitted to return to earth for a 15–day period, so that he could perform Shraddha and donate food and water in their memory. This period is now known as Pitru Paksha.

Lord Indra
Karna..

Rites of shraddha

The male who performs the shraddha should take a purifying bath beforehand and is expected to wear a Dhoti. He wears a ring of kush grass. Then the ancestors are invoked to reside in the ring. The shraddha is usually performed bare-chested, as the position of the sacred thread worn by him needs to be changed multiple times during the ceremony. The shraddha involves pinda-daan, which is an offering to the ancestors of pindas (cooked rice and barley flour balls mixed with ghee and black sesame seeds), accompanying the release of water from the hand. It is followed by the worship of  vishnu in form of the darbha grass, a gold image or shaligram stone and Yama. The food offering is then made, cooked especially for the ceremony on the roof. The offering is considered to be accepted if a crow arrives and devours the food; the bird is believed to be a messenger from Yama or the spirit of the ancestors.
A cow and a dog are also fed, and Brahmin priests are also offered food. Once the ancestors (crow) and Brahmins have eaten, the family members can begin lunch.

TULASI FESTIVAL - TULASI POOJA - TULASI VIVAH

 Day/Month of Celebration:
2nd week of November(Check your local calender)

God Worshipped  on this Occassion:
Tulsi or Vrinda (Incarnation of Mahalakshmi)
Lord Krishna

Special Food Prepared:
Marriage type food and lots of Sweets

Practise on this Day:

This festival is celebration of Lord vishnu's marriage to
Vrinda(Tulsi)This is mostly done in the evening..Fruits, flowers are offered and Tulsi plant is decorated like a bride and Lord krishna's statue is placed inside  the tulasi plant  and the  couple is linked with a cotton thread (mala) in the ceremony..

Story associated with Tulasi festival: Favourite part :)

The Tulsi plant was a woman named Vrinda (Brinda). She was married to the demon-king Jalandhar. Due to her piety and devotion to Vishnu, her husband became invincible. Even god Shiva could not defeat Jalandhar. So Shiva requested Vishnu to solve this. Vishnu disguised himself as Jalandhar and violated Vrinda. Her chastity destroyed, Jalandhar was killed by Shiva. Vrinda cursed Vishnu to become black in colour and he would be separated from his wife. Thus, he was transformed into the black Shaligram stone and in his Rama avatar, his wife Sita was kidnapped by a Ravana  and thus separated from him. Vrinda then burnt herself on her husband's funeral pyre or immolated herself due to the shame. Vishnu transferred her soul to a plant, henceforth  called as Tulsi. As per a blessing by Vishnu to marry Vrinda in her next birth, Vishnu in form of Shaligram - married Tulsi on Prabodhini Ekadashi. To commemorate this event, the ceremony of
 Tulsi Vivah is performed.

Bull crossing Pyre (From net).

Significance:

** Sankranti is the Sanskrit word, which refers to the transmigration of the Sun from one Rashi to the other, however, the Sankranti festival usually refers only to one – Makara Sankaranti, transition of the Sun from Dhanu rashi

** Shoonya masa(Dhanur masa) comes to end on this day. Auspicious things which were on hold during Shunya masa are kick started from this day.

** The starting of Uttarayana(when the sun travels towards the north) is celebrated as Makara Sankranti.

** Also being  first festival of year(English Calender)

     makes it special.

Story associated with Makara Sankranti:(Favourite part :)

As per legend  Surya deva visits the house of his son Shani deva,(Swami of Makar Rashi). Its usually said Surya deva and Shani deva  dont, get along well. But inspite of any difference between each other Lord Surya visits shani deva's house(Makara rashi)for a month.

Uttarayan is started on this day (Uttarayana is the day when the Sun leaves Dhanus and enters the Makar rashi . This marks the beginning of Uttarayan Punyakalam, a period of six months which is considered highly auspicious. It is believed to be the day time of the Devas.

It was on this day, Bhishma (Ichaa marani, the one who can die, on his prefered day) who was on bed of arrows made by Arjuna, took his last breath and reached vikuntam.

It was on this day, Lord Bhageeratha brought ganga to earth to redeem the curse of his ancestors.

It was on this day, Lord vishnu defeated Demons (Asura samhara), who was troubling devas to take away Amruta, which  emerged out of the ocean during "Samudra Manthana" (Churning of ocean").

VIKUNTA EKADASI

Day/Month of Celebration:
Usually Dec last week or Jan 1st week
(check your Local Calenders)

God Worshipped  on this Occassion:
 Lord Venkateshwara

Special Food Prepared:
People fast on this day(Atleast avoid eating rice)

Practise on this Day:

We have a practise of going to  Venkateshwara temple on Vikunta Ekadashi, which is celebrated on Dhanurmasa of  Hindu Calender.. This day is celebrated mainly in South India. In all  Perumal temples, they set up a make-shift door kind of structure on this day, and devotees pass through that.

Should avoid eating rice on this day,(Complete fasting can be followed if feasible) and visit any  Lord Venkateshwara temple..

Significance:

It is believed that that those who die any time between Vikunta ekadashi to makara Sankranti  (are believed to be freed from, the life/birth cycle; they  directly reach Vaikunta, the abode of Lord Vishnu. Also one who  has darshana of Lord coming out of the dwara(Door) called Vaikunta Dwara they reach Vaikunta as well.It is also believed fasting on Vaikunta Ekadashi is equivalent to fasting on the remaining 23  Ekadashi of the (Hindu) year.

Story associated with Vikunta Ekadashi(Favourite part :))

In Satya yuga(Krita Yuga) a demon, named Muran, was troubling Devas . Terrified  Devas led by,  Indra Deva, the lord of Heaven(Swarga Adipathi) ran to Lord Shiva, who directed them to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu agreed to help them and started a battle with Muran, which went for 1000 celestial years, When neither one was defeated, Vishnu decided that he(Muran) has to be won with yukti(Wisdom) and not Shakti(Physical strength) and decided to build a special weapon to defeat him. Vishnu went to a Cave near Himalayas, to build a weapon and was taking rest there. Muran thought this is right time to kill Vishnu as he is sleeping, and went into the cave. When Muran approached the cave , Vishnu made Shakti the female energy of vishnu, emerge out of his body and assume the form of a beautiful women who fought Muran and reduced him to ashes with one look. Vishnu was pleased by this female enery, named her Ekadashi and asked her for a boon. Ekadashi  asked a boon that,  people who observed a fast on this day should be forgiven of their sins. Lord thus declared that people who observed a fast on thist day and worshipped Ekadasi, would attain Vaikunta.

In mahabharatha  the conversation between Lord Krishna N Arjuna (Geetopadesham)  is said to have begun on this day.

It was  on this day, Amruta emerged out of the ocean during "Samudra Manthana" (Churning of ocean").

** Why should we not eat rice on Fasting days:

It is believed that,  the sweat that fell down from the head of Brahma assumed the form of a demon and he asked the Lord to provide him an place to dwell. Brahma ordered the demon to go and dwell in the rice particles eaten by men on Ekadashi day and become worms in their stomach. For this reason rice is prohibited on Ekadashi.
