TEMPLES IN MADURAI

DAY 1  MADURAI:

1.Nuburagangai & Palamudhirsolai:

Steps leading to  Nuburagangai

Nuburagangai:
Nuburagangai is a natural spring where pilgrims take bath..The legend has it that 'Suthapas' Maharishi had a very peculiar gift. He could stay under water forever, without coming up, for air.  Daily, he would go into the Silambar, immerse himself in the cold flowing waters and so that he could offer prayers to the Lord without disturbance. This became a daily ritual,on one such occasion, when Suthapas was deep under the waters, Durvasa came along. Knowing through his Gnana Drishti, Durvasa waited for Suthapas to come out. Suthapas, on the other hand was so immersed in his prayers that he hardly acknowledged the presence of Durvasa, and did not come out. Durvasa cursed “Oh Suthapas, when you remain under the water for so long, you are no longer fit to be a human. May you turn into a frog .” prepared to leave. Suthapas Maharishi realising the gravity of the situation, jumped out of the river and fell at his feet, begging for forgiveness. Durvasa, then said, Pray to Lord vishnu to reedeem the curse and you will regain your human form.Suthapas Maharishi, with his new amphibian body, swam through the Silambar to the holy city of Madurai. There by the banks of the sacred Vaigai, he engaged himself in constant prayer to Narayana..Finally the Lord Kallazhagar(Vishnu) comes from his abode from Alagar Hill to redeem Mandooga Maharishi of his curse..

Holy spring, where devotees are allowed to sprinkle water..

From the very peak of Azhagar Malai flows out the Noopura Ganga. The source of the spring is yet undetected, and it wells out from the sanctum of Rakkayi Amman and rushes down with all its purifying power. Rakkayi Amman is the protector of all the Theerthas in the place and is supposed to be the daughter of Angirasa munivar. Thousands believe that a dip in this Noopura Ganga is as holy as the one taken at the Triveni Sangamam in Prayaga.

Lord Azhagar

All the abhishekas and bathing ceremonies performed to Azhagar are done with the holy waters from the river. Temple sources report that if any other water is used, the Bronze statue will blacken instantly.  We  climbed the steps, had darshan of Azhagar, here water from spring was continously flowing on the idol, backside of this sanctum devotees are allowed to get a dip from the spring, we also sprinkled holy water from this spring, and  climbed down the steps..

Water continously flowing on Azhagar

2. Palamudhirsolai:(One of Arupadaiveedu)

We then went to Palamudhirsolai, one of the six abodes of Lord Subramanya which is on the same hill, down the Nuburagangai. There is a famous legend associated with the temple. It is said that Awaiyar, a famous Tamil poet and a Muruga devotee, came here, she became tired while travelling, and sat  under the shadow of a fruit tree and was very hungry and thirsty. At that time, a small
boy who was sitting on the tree asked her whether she wants fruits to eat from the tree. She replied yes. Then, the boy asked Avvaiyar whether she wanted roasted fruits or unroasted fruits.Avvaiyar thought, "Is there any roasted fruit in the world?" then she asked him to give roasted fruits. The boy shook the tree and fruits fell under the tree. The fruits are stuck with the mud as soon as they fell down. To remove the mud, Avvaiyar took the fruits and blew on the fruit. It looked like as though  fruits were roasted and had become warm, and Avvaiyar had blown the fruits to cool them. The small boy asked Avvaiyar whether the fruits are warm that your blowing it to cool down.. Avvaiyar was amazed by the whole thing and thought "How did a small village cow boy played such an intelligent drama?A beautiful comparison between blowing the air on the fruit to remove the mud is like blowing air to reduce the heat as the fruit is roasted. Such a beautiful comparison would not have risen in her mind even though she had gained rich knowledge in Tamil." She asked the small boy, "Who are you?"Then the small boy disappeared and  Lord Muruga appeared. This incident is believed to have taken place in Palamudhirsolai..

Palamudhirsolai temple

Palamudhirsolai temple is middle of beautiful hills, surronded by green lush. It was drizzling, when we got down. We immediately entered the temple which inhouses a beautiful idol of Lord Subramanya...We had darshan and headed to next place...

Palamudhirsolai temple  amidst beautiful hills

Meenakshi Sundareswarar:

We then headed to Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple...According to Hindu legend, in order to answer the prayers of the second Pandya king Malayadwaja Pandya and his wife Kanchanamalai, Goddess Parvati appeared out of the Holy Fire of the Putra Kameshti Yagna(sacrifice for childhood) performed by the king. This girl, who came out of the holy fire had three breasts. A voice from the heavens told the king not to worry and added that the third breast would vanish soon the girl meets her future husband. The happy king named the girl as Tadaatagai and being the heir to the throne, Tadaatagai was trained carefully in all the 64 sastras(fields of science). As the time came when Tadaatagai was to be coronated, she had to wage war on the three worlds across eight directions. After conquering Sathyaloka(Brahma's Abode), Vaikunta( Vishnu's Abode) and Amaravati(the abode of the Devas), she advanced to Kailasha(Shiva's Abode). She very easily defeated the bhoota ganas(Shiva's army) and Nandi(the celestial bull of Shiva) and headed to attack and conquer Shiva. The moment she looked at Shiva, she was unable to fight and bowed her head down due to shyness; the third breast vanished immediately. Tadaatagai realized that Shiva was her destined husband. She also realized that she was the incarnation of Goddess Parvati. Both Shiva and Tadaathagai returned to Madurai and the king arranged the coronation ceremony of his daughter, followed by her marriage with Shiva. The marriage was supposed to be the biggest event on earth, with the whole earth gathering near Madurai. Vishnu, the brother of Meenakshi, prepared to travel from his holy abode at Vaikuntam to preside over the marriage . Due to a divine play, he was tricked by Indra  and delayed on the way. The marriage was presided over by a local god from Thirupparankundram Pavalaakanivaai Perumal, (incarnation of Vishnu). After the marriage, the pair ruled over Madurai for a long time and then assumed divine forms as Sundareswarar and Meenakshi who are presiding deities of the temple.

Meenakshi temple was originally built by Kulasekarer Pandya. But the credit for the present look of the temple goes to the Nayakas, who ruled Madurai from 16th to 18th century.Meenakshi sundareshwara temple is said to inhouse 33,000 statues on the towers and inside the temple, and is famous for architectural and sculptural magnificence.

No wonder it was listed in, 30 nominees of the "New Seven Wonders of the World".The complex houses 14 gopurams ranging from 45-50m in height, the tallest being the southern tower, 51.9 metres (170 ft) high and two golden sculptured vimana (shrine) over sanctum of the main deities.Prominent things in Meenakshi temple are  Meenakshi , Sundareshwaa and Mukkurini Pillaiyar (Ganesha).

.The base of the Kadamba tree under which Indra worshipped Shiva linga (in the corridor outside the main shrine. And the idol of Nataraja who is covered with silver leaves. Hence the hall is named as Velli Ambalam (Silver Hall) can also be noted.

5  Thiruparankundram temple:
One of Arupadaiveedu

We reached  Thiruparankundram temple  around 5:30pm. This is a very big temple. As soon as we enter temple we saw colourful carvings of Horse and Mythical animals on each pillars at the entrance of the temple.

We  walked further and noticed Durga Idol. People were throwing Venne undai(Butter balls) on the Durga idol. When i asked person there they told its for good, however i did not get correct reason of why this is done.

.We walked further reaching a big mantapam, with various carvings and idol..Crossing that mantapam, we reached a huge door. Once you pass through the door you will find actual temple Mantapam. Lord Murgan is the main deity here..

Legend of this temple is, Lord Muruga at the end of Soorasamharam stayed here, along with his soldiers. As a gift for victory, Lord Indira married his daughter Deivanai to Muruga. To commemorate this event, Lord Muruga is worshipped as the presiding deity of this temple.Poet Nakkirar has composed a  poem about this Temple and  is called Thirumurugatrupadai. Thiruparankundram is a rock-cut hill temple dedicated to the Lord Subramanya Swamy. It is referred as the "Southern Himalaya" in various classical Tamil texts, where the gods assemble. Some Legends mentioned Thiruparankundram as the place where the sun and moon abide.

 Mariamman Teppakulam:

The mandapam in the centre has an idol of Vigneshwara (Vinayaka). I was wondering as i expected Amman Temple, as it is called Mariamman Teppakulam, and when i asked  purohit he told, vinayaka idol was found when the earth was being dug out from here to build the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal. So, the place attained sanctity and was converted into a teppakulam (tank). This is where the annual float festival (Theppotsavam in Tamil) takes place.

TEMPLES IN CHENNAI

Chennai is  Ramesh's Native.. Here is the List of temples we visited during  our trips to chennai.

1.Vadapalani temple
2.TTD:Tirupati Devasthanam
3.Parthasarathy temple
4.Kapaleeswar Temple
5.Santana srinivasa Temple:

Vadapalani temple:

This temple is just 10mins from  his place.. We go to this temple, on almost every visit to chennai..This   ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Muruga. There is a theppakolam(Temple tank)in front of the temple.

TTD:Tirupati Devasthanam

This temple is just at a walking distance from his place. This temple is famous for its main deities, Lord Venkateswara and  Alamelu Manga  both  worshipped at one place, unlike in Tirupati,
where Lord is in Tirumala hills and Alamelu Mangamma is in Tirchanur.

Parthasarathy temple:

Partha - Arjuna, Sarathy - Chartior.. Tiruvallikkeni or Triplicane, as the Britishers called it, happens to be the oldest temple in the city. The temple has two Gopurams (tower) each in eastern and western directions. The temple has dieties of 5 Avatars of  Vishnu Narasimhar, Ramar, Vardarajar , Ranganathar and Krishna.

Kapaleeswar Temple:

Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a temple of Shiva  located in Mylapore. The form of Shiva's wife parvati worshipped at this temple is called Karpagambal.
According to the Puranas, during the meeting of Brahma and Shiva at top of kailasa, Brahma failed to show the due respect to Shiva. Due to this, Shiva plucked of one of Brahma's heads (kapalams). In an act of penance, Brahma came down to the site of Mylapore and installed a  Lingam to please Shiva.

Santana srinivasa Temple:

Though temple might be new, Idol is believed to be 650 years old. As this deity is believed to give boon of a child for those couples who do not have child, the deity is called as Santana Srinivasa Perumal. The word "Santana" means child. Due to this, the area was named as "Maha Peru" meaning "boon of a child". In due course it became  Mogappair. The main shrine has Lord Santana Srinivasa Perumala (Vishnu) in the standing posture. The idol is gigantic and is 9.5 feet high. This seems to be a replica of the famous Balaji idol of Tirumala; however, it is taller than that of Balaji idol. The prakara (corridor) has the shrine for the Goddess named "Santana Lakshmi"

KRISHNAGIRI & VELLORE TRIP

Vellore Golden Temple, was a long pending trip. And was postponed couple of times.. We had Leave on  Tue for May 1st.. So  decided to  make it as a 1 day trip, including  Krishnagiri's  Padmavati temple & Jalakanteshwara temple with Golden temple Vellore...

We started around  7:00am, and drove non stop to Krishnagiri via Hosur. It is about 100 KMs from Bangalore. And  stopped for breakfast  around  9:00am in Kamat Restaurant Krishnagiri..  After breakfast we continued our  journey to  "Shree Parshwa Padmavathi Shaktipeet "  which was  first on our  Itinerary of the day..

Shree Parshwa Padmavathi temple :

We reached  Padmavati temple around 10:00am..  Individual temples for Naagraaj, Bhairav, Padmavathi Devi & and of Sri Parshwanath Bhagwan(23rd Thirthankar of Jain.) is spread across a big Land in the same  compound... This teerth is established by  Shri Vasant Gurudev Swamyji. Photography is is not allowed in temple and  people wearing Black dress is not allowed,Luckily none of us wearing Black dress .Temple is still  under  construction  in the main sanctum as well as outside.

We first visited  Naagraj temple, where you can find  Huttham (Snakes house). It is believed that, at Naagraaj temple one can make a wish and after it comes true, should tie a coconut in a red cloth and present it to Naagraaj. We could see lottts of  Coconuts hanged there.. Next to Naagraaj temple is Bhomyaji (Bhairav) temple. He is said to be the protector of Krishnagiri Teerth.

We then  went to Main temple  Parshwa Padmavathi.  The roof, walls and pillars of the sanctum is decorated with broken bits of coloured glass, which looks attractive.. The presiding deity is  Shri  Parshwanatha and Padmavathi..

PIC FROM JAIN SITE

Krishnagiri Dam:

We then left to Krishnagiri dam, which is around 20kms from Padmavathi temple.. It was  around 12:00pm and was sun was its peak.  Unfortunately there was no water flow in Dam,  making us disappointed. Krishnagiri dam  surroundings has a good garden. we could see many localities, with there families  cooking and  eating in the park. we were wondering  how did they manage to sit and cook,  in this hot sun..

Ramesh dint show any interest in  going to park.  Compared to KRS dam of mysore, this was nothing. But after going that far, i just wanted to go inside and see if  theres some water other-side of the park.  We all walked  inside the park, and climbed the steps, where we got some good view of water and beautiful  garden.. Because of  hot sun, we  returned soon, taking some snaps...

Ramesh got angry that i wasted  40kms(to/fro) and  made them walk in hot sun for nothing...And he insisted me that i  suggest, its better to  exclude this place:)... It was Peak summer (March) and  Mid-noon making it worse. But if you are not expecting much and  May be in winter and evenings this Garden would be good  place for picnic for Localities..

Vellore Fort :

Vellore is  around 150kms from Krishnagiri. The Fort is situated in the centre of Vellore town opposite to Old Bus stand.  It was around 2:30pm. we decided to have lunch before exploring Fort and Temple. We had  meals in near by Restaurant. And  started to fort...

Vellore Fort is 16th Century fort, built by Vijayanagara empire. It spreads over an area of 133 acres. The fort is surrounded by a moat which was once used as an additional line of defence in the case of an invasion. It includes an escape tunnel leading to Virinjipuram about 12 km away, which could be used by the king and other royals in the event of an attack. Vellore Fort has housed several royal captives including Tipu sultan and his royal family and , sri Vikrama Rajasinha of Srilanka..

PIC FROM Internet

The fort houses a Temple, a Mosque and a Church and many other buildings that are now used as public offices. As soon as we enter,  we saw a ground, where  local kids were playing cricket in hot sun,  and to the left we saw  Jalakanteshwara temple . We  first visited Jalakanteshwara temple.

Jalakanteshwara Temple :

Jalakanteshwara temple was built in the year 1550 A.D. The temple was considered a masterpiece at the time of its construction and now it has become a marvel on this land of Vellore.  During mughal period the idol was removed and kept away from the town, forgotten by the generation. Later in 1983, group of people gathered together, placed the idol and started their prayers.

The temple has a large wedding hall adorned with elegant reliefs and monolithic sculptures. It is said that the ship coming from England to carry this sank in the sea and hence the idea was dropped. This mandapam is adorned with elegant reliefs and monolithic sculptures.

The main deity here is Lord shiva. We took darshan of lord, and went around the temple. The temple is huge, having  lot more sub deities incuding Ganesha,Subramanya,Navagraha and more.. We spent some time in the temple then headed to  Golden temple, our final destination of the day...

 MahaLakshmi Golden Temple:

We then went to much hyped  Vellore Golden Temple. It was around 5:00 when we reached the temple.  Inside the temple No electronic goods {Mobiles, Handy cams, Digital Cameras} are allowed. So we kept everything in the car, and went near the complex. We saw  around 6 to 7 blocks similar to Tirumala Tirupati Q block. Security person said this common que would take around  2/3hrs, so we decided to take  ticket worth 250rs per person. (We dint want to spend 3hrs, as we had to return blore, which is around 4+ hrs journey).
PIC FROM Internet

We bought the tickets and started walking through a  star-shaped pathway, laid to a distance of 1.5 km. On either side of the pathway, the messages of 'Amma'(Founder of Golden temple is called  'Amma'  by his devotees) and quotes from Bhagavad Gita, Bible and Quran are displayed.Similar to Tirupati you can find  Drinking water taps, restrooms, Cofee shops all along the path way...

We first came across a  a huge and mind blowing  Idol of Chamundeshwari beautifully decorated and adorned richly with lot of jewels.  After that we walked further to see beautiful green landscape, artificial water fall and fountains and lots of idols of different Devis.
PIC FROM Internet

The Golden Temple is situated in a 100 acre lush green landscape in the middle of a star-shaped path,  which was built in a short span of 7 years. It was inaugurated in 24, 2007. Since then, the temple has attracted hundreds of thousands of devotees; often breaching the 1 lakh mark on special occasions.Sripuram temple is open from 7am - 8pm all 365 days. Long waiting periods for the darshan on weekends and holidays.

Twelve layers of gold foils have been pasted on copper sheets embossed with the designs of Gods and fixed on the walls.One-and-a-half tonnes of gold has gone into the design of the Sri Lakshmi Narayani Temple, which has been built at a cost of Rs.300 crore.According to Sri Sakthi Amma, the decision to have the temple coated with gold is only to attract visitors and enable them to get wisdom through the messages of the Vedas, which they will have to read before reaching the temple located on sprawling a 100 acre-site.
